An aggravatingly incompetent protagonist.
After a weekend off, the 30 Day Horror Challenge returns! Today, let’s talk about Barbara from Night of the Living Dead. ‘kay? ‘kay.
Don’t get me wrong: Night of the Living Dead is a classic. It’s an iconic film—horror or otherwise—that deserves its reputation and then some. However, the character of Barbara just kills me. She is portrayed from the very beginning as both weak-minded and worthless. She is largely clueless until a man shows up to save her.
It’s so weird because the film is otherwise totally ahead of its time. Casting Duane Jones as Ben was an awesome, progressive choice. At this point in history, most black actors were type cast in bit roles. Night of the Living Dead is often credited (and rightfully so!) for breaking a lot of racial barriers in cinema. The juxtaposition of such social progression with blatant sexism is so bizarre to me.
Barbara is one of the reasons I think Tom Savini’s 1990 remake is completely superior. In that film, she is a strong, liberated, ass kicking individual. Ben helps her, sure, but she totally could’ve survived without him. And that, my friends, is how it should be. Everyone is equal, even and perhaps especially in the case of a zombie outbreak. =]
