30 Day Horror Challenge  - Day 05

Excellent use of sound effects.

Absolute no-brainer. I can think of tons of horror films with great sound effects, but none of them are quite as effective as The Texas Chainsaw Massacre.

Given its shoestring budget, director Tobe Hooper opted for a very minimalistic film score. Check out the video above. Notice two things:

  1. It’s freakin’ terrifying.
  2. There’s some ambient noise, but no actual music.

Couple those subtle audio choices with the dirty, dingy look of the lighting and set design, the believable and completely unglamorous protagonists, and the realistically crude looking antagonists that are trying to hack ‘em up. Suddenly, the entire presentation starts to take on a very tense, very uncomfortable, very believable “documentary” feel.

That sort of presentation is all but played out in 2010, but you’ve gotta remember: this was 1974. It was years before Paranormal Activity, the Blair Witch Project, or even Cannibal Holocaust were using realism to scare people senseless. I can only imagine this film was truly shocking, then.

Hell, it’s truly shocking now. The (lack of) score has everything to do with that.
