Doctor Who is a show that, I think, more horror fans need to look into. It has something for everybody: there’s action, comedy, sci-fi, fantasy, romance, and, yes, lots of horror. Many of the creepiest things I’ve seen on television have happened to the Doctor and his companions. The show frequently features monsters and murderers and madmen, so it’s only too natural that it should have its fair share of genuine nightmare fodder.
A fantastic example, pictured above, is my choice for this entry. The Weeping Angels. It’s a bit of a cheap pick — the Angels look like statues, but they’re not really inanimate objects. They live and breathe, but do so with a caveat: when gazed upon by another creature they lock in place, becoming the (very much inanimate) statues they resemble. It sounds a bit silly, I’ll concede, and also like a pretty big impediment, but if you sit and consider it the idea is terrifying. They’re statues. They can hide in plain sight. And when they’re out of plain sight, they can move with incredible speed. If they want you, they’ll get you. All you have to do to fall prey to a Weeping Angel is not see one. And how easy is that? You can’t sleep with one eye open and you can’t keep an eye on every direction. And even if you could, sooner or later, you’d need to blink…
